John Lyon’s Charity Annual Report 2023
Everything starts with an idea. Most charities start out with minimal resources, staff or infrastructure. It takes one person, who can galvanise a team and fire the public with enthusiasm, to turn an idea into a success.
This year’s Annual Report is dedicated to the man who had a brilliant idea and made it happen.
Andrew Stebbings was the first CEO of John Lyon’s Charity who sadly passed away in June 2023.
Andrew had a vision to continue John Lyon’s legacy to support the life chances of children and young people through education. For ten years, Andrew fought and campaigned for a grant giving trust to be formed and in 1991, Andrew’s tenacity and drive paid off. John Lyon’s Charity as a grant giving entity was officially launched.
The Charity’s success over the last three decades shows how a simple idea can be turned into a first rate charitable organisation. John Lyon’s Charity can now proudly say that it is a major player in the Third Sector and can look back on thirty years of good work.

The people behind the inspiring idea
Just as John Lyon’s Charity began with Andrew Stebbings’ good idea, and his commitment to supporting excellent causes, we also want to acknowledge and thank our grantees for their good ideas. It is the excellent organisational skills and selfless work done by these grantees that motivates the Charity to continue investing in these organisations.
All of the charities we support started out as a great idea and have grown into great organisations. John Lyon’s Charity believes wholeheartedly in the work and ethos of these charities. We will continue to work with them to enhance the chances of children from all backgrounds.
Below is a snapshot of how an inspiring idea can become an incredible charity that supports the life-chances of young people through education.
icandance: a community where anyone can dance
John Lyon’s Charity prides itself on supporting organisations that provide opportunities for children and young people with special needs and disabilities to have the same experiences as their peers. Any person should be able to have the same experience as another and a prime example of this is the creative, inspiring and inclusive charity – icandance.
The Avenues Youth Project (AYP)
The Avenues Youth Project (AYP) was founded in 1979 to provide informal education and recreational opportunities for local children and young people of the African Caribbean community in North Westminster.
Over the years membership has widened to reflect the diverse and evolving composition of the community, with The Avenues now accessed by over 600 children and young people (8-18 years old) each year.
Organisation of Young Africans (OYA)
A supplementary school is a community-based initiative that provides additional educational support for children also attending mainstream schools. They are often geared to also provide mother-tongue and cultural classes, sports and arts activities such as music and dance.
John Lyon’s Charity has always been a huge supporter of supplementary education and at the forefront of the National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education (NRCSE), and subsequent merger with the YPF Trust, announced in April 2022. The Charity has funded many supplementary schools on their journey to success and one excellent example of this is Organisation of Young Africans (OYA).
Future Stars
Since its inception in 1991, John Lyon’s Charity has had a mission to ensure all children and young people across the Beneficial Area experience the same opportunities as any other young person.
Over the years, the Charity’s most popular Fund has been the Open Programme, which can provide funding towards core costs, salary costs or direct project funding. It is this Fund where the Charity often sees the biggest impact and achievements within its community and a fantastic example of this is the organisation, Future Stars.
Phoenix Rising
Youth groups play a unique and valuable role, providing healthy, positive activities for young people that increase health, wellbeing, aspiration and engagement levels; youth groups also provide a space for young people to be themselves and explore new activities with their friends.
With the help and support of John Lyon’s Charity, over the last three decades youth clubs across the Charity’s Beneficial Area have thrived and delivered high quality, innovative youth work to vast numbers of young people. One example of this is the work of musical youth group – Phoenix Rising.
The ‘John Lyon Way’
The Charity’s new Strategy (launched 1 April 2023) has set out a more clearly articulated and more concise explanation of the work of the Charity and its role within John Lyon’s Foundation.
It also sets out how it will continue to strive to be fit for purpose now and over the next five years and brings John Lyon’s own vision for Education back to the front and centre of the Charity’s work.
Cathryn Pender, Anna Hoddinott and Erik Mesel have a combined length of service at John Lyon’s Charity of over sixty years. Using their combined experience, they discuss the characteristics that make John Lyon’s Charity unique, the complexities of its Beneficial Area as well as its links to the wider John Lyon’s Foundation, and how the Charity has looked to its past to direct its future.
