John Lyon’s Charity prides itself on having a great deal of knowledge to offer the voluntary sector. We work in partnership with groups and organisations to seek the best possible solutions to the challenges they face and have a significant impact on groups, organisations and local authorities in the Beneficial Area, beyond the giving of grants.
We use our position of influence to promote partnerships and collaborations within the Beneficial Area and can provide neutral forums for stakeholders to meet and ensure that the right partnerships are forged. It is in our interests that there should be a vibrant and effective voluntary sector in our Beneficial Area working in partnership for the benefit of the community.
Below you can see a selection of examples of how our influence and knowledge has resulted in strong and trusted partnerships within our Beneficial Area.
Innovative Partnerships: Virtual Schools
John Lyon’s Charity developed an innovative solution to ensure children and young people in care are reached and supported. The Charity brokered a partnership with Virtual Schools in the Beneficial Area and created an Enrichment Coordinator position to ensure children in care experienced the same opportunities as others. The initiative was intended to promote sharing resources and encourage the local authorities to work together to maximize resources and provide a wide variety of activities for Looked After Children to access.
After over a decade of relationship building and engaging in important conversations within the Beneficial Area, John Lyon’s Charity understood that partnering with Virtual Schools was the best way of ensuring that funding reached those who needed it most.
A Virtual School is a team inside a local authority whose remit is to support the educational attainment of Children Looked After within that local authority area.
John Lyon’s Foundation: The Positive Partnership
John Lyon’s Charity, along with Harrow School and The John Lyon School, forms the educational organisation: John Lyon’s Foundation.
Although each element of the Foundation has separate aims, structures, accounts, investments and trustees, they share an overarching governing body. They work to achieve a wide range of educational and charitable objectives, both individually and collectively, as part of the Foundation. The core objective of the partnership is to maximise the opportunities for children and young people by enabling them to realise their potential, broaden their horizons and ultimately enable them to experience and enjoy a better quality of life.
Here are two positive partnership examples where John Lyon’s Charity, Harrow School and The John Lyon School have come together to broker partnerships, resulting in impactful and educational projects.

Every project that John Lyon’s Charity funds results in a strong partnership in one form or other, whether it’s the coming together of an organisation and a school or strengthening relationships within the Charity itself.

Collaboration is at the heart of everything the Young Peoples Foundations (YPFs) do in the Charity’s Beneficial Area…
The budding partnership between Harrow School and Young Harrow Foundation is a wonderful example of this and how the Charity can utilise its wealth of local knowledge acquired over almost three decades to unlock resource for the third sector.
Building Partnerships between Special Schools: West London Inclusive Arts Festival
John Lyon’s Charity is committed to providing opportunities for young people who have a special need or disability. We have funded a wide variety of activities that give disabled children the opportunity to try new skills, have greater social interaction and build up their confidence. John Lyon’s Charity prides itself in championing successful projects and encouraging partnerships between organisations to share learning, knowledge and skills to create something extraordinary and innovative.
In 2016, John Lyon’s Charity awarded a Small grant to College Park School of £5,000 to run an inclusive arts festival across College Park and QEII schools.
Due to the initial success of the first grant, the partnership has resulted in the Charity awarding a Main Grant to College Park School of £56k over three years to extend the Arts festival to other special schools locally.
Stand up for SEND
A call to action from and to special schools, Arts organisations, Music Hubs and funders.
John Lyon’s Charity has been a long-term supporter of Arts activities for young people with special needs and disabilities (SEND). Over the years, the Charity has seen huge variances in both the quantity and quality of activities on offer for young people with SEND and how vital the support of both parents and schools can be.
Brokering Partnerships To Tackle Difficult Topics
John Lyon’s Charity has brokered partnerships between the voluntary sector and schools to help support the discussion of difficult topics to children and young people. John Lyon’s Charity carefully work with schools and organisations to ensure that the partnerships formed result in open, sensitive and safe conversations with education at the heart of each difficult conversation.

Perivale Primary School & The FGM Project
Education plays a vital role in helping children, young people and the support networks around them understand and tackle sensitive topics.
Often the most important subjects are the most difficult to talk about – not least when it comes to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). John Lyon’s Charity recognises that change is more often effective when driven by communities themselves.
StreetDoctors
A strong partnership with Voluntary Sector experts is vitally important to the Charity’s mission as well as helping schools and youth groups tackle difficult issues.
We see it as our duty to achieve positive change within education, even if the topic is difficult to discuss.
Educate & Celebrate
Partnerships are integral to many projects funded by John Lyon’s Charity and Educate & Celebrate is no exception.
Educate & Celebrate equips communities with the knowledge, skills and confidence to embed gender, gender identity and sexual orientation into the fabric of an organisation. It provides intensive support and guidance to schools to ensure they are fully LGBT+ inclusive, teaching children and young people to always be welcoming.
YPF Trust
The launch of the YPF Trust went ahead as planned on 10th March at the British Library. The evening was a great success…
The Young People’s Foundation (YPF) model is an example of partnership working in practice. From its beginnings, with the establishment of the Young Brent Foundation, the YPF family has grown rapidly and there are now nine YPFs in London and Manchester and many more in the pipeline.
